National Parks in China

China has around 300 national parks and nature reserves, protecting about two per cent of its land area.

Among the best known and most visited of the national parks in China are:

The Jiuzai Valley National Park, locally known as Jiuzhaigou, is located in the Min Shan mountain range, Northern Sichuan in South Western China. The Park is known for its fabled blue and green lakes, spectacular waterfalls, narrow conic karst land forms and its unique wildlife, among which are some of the rarest species of animals in the world like Panda and Snow leopard. It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1992.

The Wolong Nature Reserve located high in the mountains of western China's Sichuan Province covers an area of about 200,000 hectares in the Qionglai Mountains region. Wolong is home to over 6,000 species of plants and animals. It is one of the last protected homes of the giant panda, red panda, snow leopard, golden monkey, golden languor, and the musk deer. Wolong contains lush deciduous and evergreen temperate forests and high, ice-covered mountains. Wolong is a UNESCO “Man & Biosphere” protected area and gets up to 100,000 visitors every year.

Huangshan Mountain National Park is best known for its Four Wonders – towering peaks, spectacular rocks, uniquely shaped pines, and mystical clouds. The top most attraction of this park are the 1500 year old Welcoming Guest Pine and the See Off Guest Pine. The beautiful mountains are also one of the seven natural wonders in Asia and are a home to a rich variety of flora and fauna. The tourists are allowed to explore one of the best preserved ecosystems which is rich in wild life.

These stone formations are spread over an area of more than 25 000 hectares, most of which is not even allowed for the visitors. Various bus tours are locally available for the easy accessibility to some of the important places within the national park.

Wulingyuan National Park is one of the best natural parks in China due to the perfect climate, fresh air, and a relatively long list of places to explore. The beautiful landscape of Wulingyuan National Park offers a number of sandstone pillars, gorges, waterfalls, caves, and a couple of natural bridges. The park is home to numerous endangered plant and animal species both and is again a World Heritage Site according to UNESCO. With 97 percent area under forest cover, most tourists find it thrilling and adventurous to explore around in the wilderness.
