Hotels in Macau
Macau has an official hotel rating based on the star system. Five stars are given to the best and most luxurious hotels, one star to very basic types of hotels. Most holiday makers would prefer at least a three star rated hotel. To run a hotel in Macau you must have a license from the Macau Government Tourist Office, this is also the body that issues the classification of each individual hotel, i.e. if it should be classified as a five, four etc. stars hotel. A hotel can apply for a change to its classification if it has made major improvements since it was last classified. All hotels are inspected on a regular basis to evaluate if the classification it has still applies.
Some members of the hospitality industry around the world have claimed a six star rating for their operation. One example is the Crown Macau, on Taipa Island. This is not an official rating, but it shows that some members believe their hotel is better than five stars, although from the definition of a five star hotel, this not possible, a five star hotel is simply defined as the best possible.
