The Hong Kong International Airport, also known as Chek Lap Kok, is the main port for visitors to Hong Kong by air, and one of the busiest airports in the world.
The new Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) commenced operations in July 1998. In June 2007 a Terminal 2 was opened so that HKAI now is a two-runway and two-terminal airport. The airport is the fifth busiest international airport in the world; in 2007 more than 47.8 million passengers used the airport. With some 800 aircraft movements every day and nearly 90 airlines operating from HKIA, Hong Kong is linked with over 155 destinations around the world, including some 40 cities on the Chinese mainland.
There are many direct flights to Hong Kong from every continent in the world. Most major cities in Oceania, Europe and North America are all served with at least one daily flight.
Flights between Hong Kong and other major Asian cities are also frequent: up to 40 flights per day connecting Hong Kong with Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Taipei, Tokyo, Shanghai, Manila, Seoul, Bangkok and Beijing. Other routes may be cheaper, however. For destinations within China, it is often cheaper to fly from Shenzhen than from Hong Kong, as flights from the mainland to Hong Kong are considered to be international flights and therefore priced as such. For elsewhere in Asia, consider Macao. The discount airlines land there because it has lower fees than Hong Kong.
Most major airlines and many low cost airlines fly to Hong Kong. The Cathay Pacific Airlines, an international airline owned by Hong Kong airport, and its subsidiary airline Dragonair, are Hong Kong's main air carriers; they would be a good option for those who can access them.
